STUCK BETWEEN STATIONS
SEATTLE – The Enterprise Rent-a-Car dude picks me up. We make awkward small talk for 20 blocks to the office.

"Going anywhere good?" he asks.

"I'm a freelance reporter for the Post-Intelligencer, covering a seaweed foraging class in the San Juans."

"Seaweed?"

"Yup, gonna harvest it and eat it. Very nutritious, but probably gross."

"San Juans?"

"Big archipelago about 90 minutes north. World- famous holiday destination. Where are you from originally?"

"Lynwood."

Seattle suburban donut territory. Um.

He tries to return volley: "So did you have to work today?"

"Well, I know it doesn't look like much, but I'm working right now."
