My latest Yahoo piece – on British narrowboats – stirred up so many memories of my time on the Oxford Canal. At the turn of the millennium, I lived onboard the Narrowboat Harmonia, moored near Wolvercote. Some nights I'd bike home along the towpath only to discover her mooring pins popped and my home drifting 15 feet off the bank. Once she broke down and had to be punted (poled) to the shipyard against a gale-force headwind. And later a tenant managed to sink her, flooding the cabin with an aromatic mixture of mud and diesel.
Despite all the dirt and drama, she remains the best purchase I ever made...
