THE ART OF FERRY MAINTENANCE
SKAGWAY, Alaska: Mountains rear ever higher above the fjord. As I gaze into the wake – churned the milky sage of glacial-melt – the MV Columbia bellies up to the dock.

Twenty years after my journey to Alaska begins, I finally arrive.

My friend Edward's waiting in the terminal, front-and-center – unlike the, ahem, Balkan mishap. "I figured you'd be at the prow screaming, "gooooooo," after three days," he laughs.

"No way, man, I'm all fucking Zen now."

  2. Yes, though anonymous, you're clearly one of an elite cadre of friends, worthy of our squished penny project, which both frittered away Ed's spare change hoard and launched the AFZ writing school.

    Ah, multitasking at its finest...
