BIG FAT SPITS IN THE HURRICANE'S EYE

SEATTLE, Washington – Among last year's plot twists, I won travel writing's ersatz Pulitzer for the piece I chucked into the ring last minute: Calm As the Hurricane's Eye.

Silly me. I thought my expat epic At The Seashore with Medea – nicknamed Big Fat, as in "Greek divorce" – would be lauded, if anything. I mean, just lookit all those gratuitous classical references! And the editor compared me to Henry friggin' Miller.

My ego was the size of a Balkan empire ... and just as easily deflated.

But all's well that ends well. Because the story's anthology, Greece, A Love Story, just jabbed back with Best Travel Book for Planet Earth 2008. Rather than split the $100 prize into doppio cappuccinos for all involved, we donated it to Women For Women International.

I, um, bought dive gear with mine.

  1. Congratulations on another award! Another pair of pink flippers, no doubt.
