BEAR WITH ME

Port Renfrew, British Columbia – A gun cracks through the mist.

"Only one reason to shoot in town," I think, frozen alongside the main road. "Garbage bear. And I bet it's gonna burst out of the bushes right – THERE!"

Ten feet in front of me, the understory erupts. A black bear, buttful of buckshot, legs it for deeper forest cover.

Fifty miles of wilderness and I encounter megafauna on tarmac. Figures.

  2. are you sure it wasn't one of the monsters that stalked you the day before?

  3. Petra: I planned an escape route into the cab of a logging truck, had the bear bolted back my way. That's probably cool demerit points, though, eh?

DB: spoken like a true Canadian! What type of animal does it take to impress you stone-cold northerners anyway?

Sascha: I was probably being stalked by a clumsy squirrel or something the day before, whereas this was a living, breathing, scared-$hitless bear.

  5. No shame there: even the fearless Scooby cowered before the Monster of Mexico...

  6. I am shocked to learn that Casey Kasem, at the age of 102, is still the voice of Shaggy. Now that is impressive.
