NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION?
TRONDHEIM, Norway: The other day, I overheard a colleague ask: "Why was Grieg short? Was that happenstance?"

Um ... heard of genetics and nutrition? Not exact sciences, to be sure, but not voodoo either.

(The real question is how Grieg managed a double existence as a Norwegian composer and Mark Twain, because photos don't lie: Edvard versus Samuel. Coincidence? Read the book...).

"So what's the weirdest question you've ever been asked?" my friend often queries tourism experts.

"Where can I buy totem pole seeds?" was a classic, followed by "what time do you let the whales out of the cages?"

The Victoria resident patiently explained that the orca pods ranged freely.

"No, no, no," the woman barked. "The whales. The ones that look like slippery panda bears!"

But Norway tops it all. Rumor has it that some Americans sued the Hurtigruten because the "midnight sun cruise" showcased the same sun as New York's.

Ah, Amanda! No posts since Trondheim? Where are you? Lost with a new reindeer?

  2. Nope: drowning in the dark fjord of deadlines...

I'll catch up soon, though. Because the Honduras installments are a joy to recount. Ax.
